"Secret Slaves: A Jessica Soho Special Report on Human Trafficking" Airs This Sunday (Sept. 10)

THIS Sunday (September 10), GMA Public Affairs presents a timely documentary on one of the most rampant crimes in the world via “Secret Slaves: A Jessica Soho Special Report on Human Trafficking.”

Hosted by the country's most trusted and most awarded broadcast journalist Jessica Soho, “Secret Slaves” follows the stories of both the survivors and trafficked individuals who have experienced and endured living in the long shadows of human trafficking. Joining Jessica are senior news correspondents Emil Sumangil and John Consulta.

Human trafficking lurks in many corners of the world and it has become one of the most profitable organized crimes. According to the US State Department, thousands of Filipinos - women, children and men are subjected to various forms of human trafficking every year.

In some parts of Southeast Asia, international criminal rings running cryptocurrency scam hubs target and recruit Filipinos to work as customer support representatives. But when they land in Myanmar, they are forced to trick individuals into investing in cryptocurrency. When they refuse or when they do not reach their quota, they are meted out with punishments.

Jessica probes this new and emerging human trafficking scheme which has turned Filipinos into cyber scammers as she hears the harrowing stories of some victims who were enslaved by syndicates.

Emil, on the other hand, visits a scam hub where foreign nationals are forced to perform fraudulent acts while John travels all the way to Thailand and Myanmar to uncover this illegal trade victimizing hundreds of Filipinos.

An alarming global issue, human trafficking does not spare children. The Philippines has become one of the world's largest sources of sexually exploited children. At least two million children below 18 had experienced online sexual abuse as millions of their lewd images and videos are uploaded and sold online in 2021. Cybersex remains a growing and alarming form of human trafficking.

For several months, the team of Secret Slaves worked together with the National Bureau of Investigation Anti-Human Trafficking Division, Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking, and Destiny Rescue International, a non-government organization against human trafficking, to conduct entrapment and rescue operations involving a cybersex case in Metro Manila.

Meanwhile, in Angeles City, Pampanga, young girls and women are forced to enter the sexual trade due to extreme poverty. Victims are easily lured by sex traffickers through online transactions and are brought to a hotel to meet sexual predators. In some instances, victims are harassed and abused by their clients.

Another illegal trade continues to thrive: the underground trade of kidney selling which has preyed on vulnerable victims. Kidney hunters roam online in search of living donors. Although the government has made it harder for organ traffickers, it has not been able to stop the lucrative underground market with some victims receiving death threats from middlemen and are forced to sell their kidneys.

“Secret Slaves” aims to raise awareness about human trafficking and these stories will serve as cautionary tale that would help the public avoid getting preyed on by unscrupulous individuals.

JERI VIOLAGO DROPS TWO NEW SONGS UNDER STAR MUSIC

AFTER more than a year in the making, ABS-CBN’s Star Music is finally releasing Jeri Violago’s initial offering as a recording artist.

“We are making available not just one, but two new songs I composed especially for him,” says prize-winning songwriter Vehnee Saturno.

Vehnee describes ‘Gusto Kita’ as a straightforward love song. The second song, 'Hindi Ka Nag-iisa,’ continues the love story told in ‘Gusto Kita’ by offering words of assurance to the loved one.          

   

With the release of the twin songs, Jeri is slowly but surely getting close to his dream, that of becoming a versatile entertainer.

The 23–year old Ateneo de Manila Business Management cum laude graduate signed a 3-tier contract with Star Music, ABS-CBN’s music production arm. 

      

In 2022, Jeri signed separate contracts with Star Music in various capacities: as an artist, a composer, and record producer.

Upon graduation last year, Jeri asked permission from his dad and mom, Joselito and Chiqui Violago, to allow him to pursue a career in music.

  

He turned down dad’s offer to take on a key position at the family-owned rice mill business in San Jose, Nueva Ecija.

    

Star Music’s Jonathan Manalo believes that Jeri’s singing-performing career is anchored on his strong vocals and wide range of talent.

His versatility as a singer is backed by a string of awards earned during his years at the Ateneo, where his high school group emerged as champion at Musikapella competition in 2014. Jericho was also named champion at the Ateneo Grade School Singing Competition in 2011. He was also vice-president of Ateneo Senior High School Glee Club.

   

During live performances, Jeri  could shift with equal ease from pop, jazz and swing to R&B and soul. He loves OPM and is looking forward to collaborating with today’s hit makers. His entertainment credits include performances at the Music Museum and GSIS Museum.

In these outings, he would perform songs from King and I, Annie, South Pacific as well as OPM hits and jazzy standards, think Michael Buble. As a teen, Jericho trained at The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab.

ABS-CBN to File Motion for Reconsideration after "It's Showtime!" Suspension: MTRCB Releases Another Statement

IN an official statement of ABS-CBN dated September 4, 2023, said they have received the Movie and Television Review Classifications Board (MTRCB) ruling released on Monday. 

ABS-CBN will file a motion for reconsideration after the MTRCB suspended  "It's Showtime!" for 12 airing days.

With this development, the MTRCB releases another official statement regarding the 12-day suspension of "It's Showtime"...

"The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) reassures the public that it will continue to uphold due process and fairness in the discharge of its regulatory mandate and quasi-judicial function, as provided by law.

"In each adjudication proceeding, the Board ensures that respondents are accorded due process and exercise their right to a fair trial. Through the Agency’s Hearing and Adjudication Committee, respondents are given the opportunity to present their case and submit position papers, which are deliberated upon by the said Committee. After considering the merits of the case, the Committee recommends to the Board its final decision for affirmation.

"Last 17 August 2023, a special board meeting was held to address multiple adjudicated cases, including the 25 July 2023 episode of "It's Showtime." On 29 August 2023, during its regular board meeting, the Board unanimously voted on the suspension of the said program. This decision was made with careful consideration of prior warnings and offenses associated with the show. Chairperson Lala Sotto inhibited from voting, ensuring that members of the Board exercised their independent judgment in determining the appropriate course of action.

"Despite the imposition of the penalty, respondents have the right to file a Motion for Reconsideration (MR) within fifteen (15) days after receipt of the decision. Should the respondents find the Board’s decision on the MR unfavorable, they may choose to appeal to the Office of the President within fifteen (15) days from the receipt of the decision on the MR.

"The order suspending the show shall only take effect after the lapse of the aforementioned periods without the respondents having filed their MRs or appeals."

MTRCB Suspends “It’s Showtime!” for 12 Airing Days

 

THE Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) issued today, 04 September 2023, its decision to suspend the live noontime program “It’s Showtime!” for twelve (12) airing days.

 

Viewers have lodged multiple complaints before the MTRCB concerning the show’s 25 July 2023 episode wherein the program’s hosts allegedly acted in an indecent manner during one of its segments, “Isip Bata.” The said case was referred to the MTRCB’s Hearing and Adjudication Committee which heard the case and required the respondents to submit their position papers, following a procedural process.

 

In accordance with the Presidential Decree (P.D.) No. 1986 (MTRCB Charter), the respondents may file one Motion for Reconsideration (MR) within fifteen (15) days after receipt of the decision. Should the Board’s Decision be adverse to the respondent’s MR, they may appeal to the Office of the President within fifteen (15) days from the receipt of the decision on the MR. 

This is not the first time that a preventive suspension order was imposed on It’s Showtime. In 2010, the MTRCB imposed a 20-day preventive suspension on ABS-CBN’s daily variety program then called “Showtime.” In 2023 alone, the MTRCB has received multiple complaints which the Board has given due course.

Most recently, the Board issued two (2) additional warnings to the noontime show concerning the following cases:

Case no. 1: Inappropriate utterance of the word “G Spot” by hosts Jhong Hilario and Vice Ganda, during the 24 January 2023 episode of “It’s Showtime!” in violation of Section 2 (B), Chapter IV of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Presidential Decree (P.D.) No. 1986.

Decision: The Board found the Respondents (ABS-CBN Corporation Broadcasting Network [ABS-CBN], ZOE Broadcasting Network, Inc. [ZBNI] and TV 5 Network, Inc.) remiss in the performance of their respective functions and duties required under the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of P.D. No. 1986, specifically Section 2 (B) Chapter IV thereof, and are admonished to refrain from making any utterances of similar nature for the same will be dealt more severely.

Case no. 2: Inappropriate utterance of the word “Tinggil” by host Vhong Navarro, during the 03 June 2023 episode of “It’s Showtime!” in violation of Section 2 (B), Chapter IV of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of P.D. No. 1986.

Decision: Derelict in the performance of their respective functions and duties under the IRR of P.D. No. 1986, Respondents (ABS-CBN and ZBNI) were sternly warned by the Board that a similar utterance will be dealt with more severely.

At present, the noontime show has duly submitted their MRs for the above-mentioned cases which are currently pending with the MTRCB’s Adjudication Committee.

Prior Warnings

It may also be recalled that the noontime show received prior warnings from the Board in relation to the utterance of the word “Pek Pek Shorts” in the 09 January 2023 episode of the show and the indecent attire and performance of Kim Duenas in the “Girl on Fire” segment aired on 14 February 2023, in both cases, the Respondents were admonished that similar violations shall be dealt with more severely.

Dismissed Complaints over lack of Merit

Apart from these, the MTRCB has received multiple complaints regarding the noontime show, which the Board dismissed in the spirit of fairness and equity, such as (1) Complaints regarding the “Rampanalo” segment money game where hosts were paired together to catch play money using their lips; (2) Complaints regarding the allegedly suggestive “macho” dancing in one of the show’s segments; (3) Complaints regarding the wardrobe malfunctions or “nip slips” of one of the performers, to which MTRCB issued a memorandum urging stakeholders to exercise prudence in securing their talents’ clothing during performances; and (4) Complaints of alleged inappropriate wearing of the Barong Tagalog of one of the Hosts, to name a few.     

The MTRCB only adjudicates cases which, to the Board’s judgment, have basis in law and its mandate, P.D. No. 1986.
