Busan International Film Festival Features HBO Asia Originals ‘Gensan Punch,’ ‘On the Job: The Missing 8’

 

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, OCTOBER 5, 2021 — Two films, one project, and seven companies will comprise the country’s representatives online in Asia’s largest film festival, the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea from October 6 to 15. 

Established in 1996, the annual Busan International Film Festival aims to introduce new films and first-time directors, especially from Asian countries. It also attracts a youthful audience through its efforts to develop and promote young talents.

Selected in the “A Window on Asian Cinema,” a section that puts a spotlight on new or the most-talked-about films of the year by talented Asian filmmakers are new HBO Asia Original film “Gensan Punch” by Brillante Mendoza, and fresh from its world premiere at Venice Film Festival, Erik Matti’s “On The Job: The Missing 8.” 

One of seven Asian films nominated for the Kim Jiseok Award in Busan, “Gensan Punch” is about a Japanese man with a prosthetic leg who goes to the Philippines to train and become a professional boxer. The film is also a CreatePHFilm Fund for Post-Production grantee by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and will have its world premiere in Busan before premiering exclusively on HBO.

Now made into an HBO Original six-part series, crime-thriller film “On The Job: The Missing 8” revolves around a corrupt media man who seeks justice for the disappearance of his colleagues, crosses paths with an inmate-hitman. John Arcilla who plays Sisoy Salas in the film is the first Filipino to bag the Volpi Cup for Best Actor in the recently concluded Venice Film Festival.

Participating in the Asian Project Market (APM), a co-production platform in Asia that offers emerging filmmakers the opportunity to meet international leading film professionals, are producer Armi Cacanindin and director Sigrid Andrea Bernardo with their project “Happy Endings” from October 12 to 14. 

FDCP will host the online panel discussion “Co-Producing with the Philippines” and a virtual Philippine pavilion with seven local companies: Sine Caboloan Ltd. Co., ABS-CBN (International Production & Co-Production), ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc., Eichef Media \ HFilms Co., Cignal Entertainment, The Producers Asia, and KT House Productions Inc. in the 15th edition of Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) from October 11 to 14.

The 26th Busan International Film Festival will be held in hybrid format from October 6 to 15.

MANILA (October 01, 2021) – The stars and signs aligned for WeTV Original series Boyfriend No. 13 as they bagged two national awards at the Asian Academy Creative Awards. 

The winners were announced during a virtual event held last September 30.

Boyfriend No. 13  was selected as the National Winner - Philippines for Best Comedy Programme and Best Original Screenplay for writer Michelle Ngu. These two awards are the first that WeTV’s original content has been recognized for – strengthening the streamer’s vision of bringing compelling local content to the wider global market. 

The winners of the AACA’s international competition will be announced in December.

FDCP Champions ‘Edutainment’ with Over 100 Curated Titles Streaming on FDCP Channel

TO provide significant films that inspire, enrich and entertain in one platform, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) drops a total of 104 films on the FDCP Channel platform, started last September 30.  

“FDCP Channel 100” aims to serve as an easy-to-use streaming platform through a thematic curation of films and audiovisual content according to various educational topics. For a monthly subscription of only PHP 99, students, film enthusiasts, and filmmakers will be able to access hard-to-find local films on the FDCP Channel.

“Streaming platforms everywhere are continuously emerging, overwhelming us with various content. However, there is a gap in streaming platforms for academic use and by categorizing the films by themes such as cultural, heritage and sociodrama, it’ll be more efficient for our audiences to pick out local films for educational and entertainment purposes,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño.

There are 104 titles available for subscription, 77 new titles added to the 27 existing titles on the FDCP Channel.

GMA Network's 'Heartful Cafe' Streams on Netflix Philippines

 

A brewing romance between two business owners-turned-lovers is set to conquer the hearts of online viewers as GMA Network's well-loved primetime series 'Heartful Cafe' streams on Netflix Philippines beginning October 14. 

Following its well-received run on GMA since its premiere in April, Heartful Cafe joins the growing list of Kapuso shows on the popular video streaming platform.

The original series is headlined by Asia’s Limitless Star Julie Anne San Jose as Heart Fulgencio, an online romance novelist and coffee enthusiast who owns a cozy and quaint cafe called the Heartful Cafe, and Kapuso heartthrob David Licauco as Ace Nobleza, a competitive and goal-driven businessman who takes an interest in Heart’s cafe. 

 

Joining them in the series are EA Guzman as Uno Ynares, Ayra Mariano as Mars, Victor Anastacio as Roco, Angel Guardian as Charity Manabat, Zonia Mejia as Sol Fulgencio, and Jamir Zabarte as Buddy Portales. 

Set in a coffee shop located inside a university campus, Heartful Cafe follows the story of Heart Fulgencio (Julie). For Heart, the Heartful Cafe is more than just a stomping ground for coffee drinkers; rather, it’s a place where all the magic happens. Despite having experienced heartbreak herself, Heart enjoys playing cupid for her customers who seek help regarding matters of the heart. When her cafe turns into shambles, Ace Nobleza (David), a handsome co-investor, comes into her life and rescues her. 

 

Just like how love brews in mysterious ways, will this investment lead to an unexpected romance between two opposing strangers?
