'Puregold CinePanalo' Celebrates Second Year with More Grants for Filmmakers

THE journey to the second year of Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival is finally underway, with its introductory press conference held last July 23 at the Gateway Cineplex 18.

A sequel to last year’s historic debut Puregold CinePanalo, this year’s iteration promises to give filmmakers across the country more opportunities to showcase their skill, creativity, and dedication to their craft.

 Ivy Piedad and Chris Cahilig

Puregold is treating the success of the festival's inaugural run as a launching pad for something even bigger. This year’s version of the Puregold CinePanalo has up for grabs an increased funding pool for selected filmmakers, with seven full-length directors set to receive a production grant worth three million pesos (PHP3,000,000.00), while twenty-five selected student short film directors will receive a production grant worth one hundred and fifty thousand pesos (P150,000.00). Seven full-length film grants are to be given this time around, surpassing last year’s six.

Chris Cahilig, Ivy Piedad, Jim Baltazar and Ricky Orellana

Emphasized at the press conference was that, as in the previous year, this year’s Puregold CinePanalo seeks film entries that showcase the indomitable spirit of the Filipino through uplifting and inspiring “panalo stories.”

The press conference also sent out reminders that those who believe they have what it takes have to submit a complete screenplay among other requirements by either July 30 for full-length films or August 15 for student shorts.

To encourage aspiring filmmakers to join the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, a slew of directors from last year’s event joined the press conference to share their experiences creating their selected features. Present at the launch was Always Panalo Film awardee Carlo Obispo. Best Picture winner Kurt Soberano, of the recently re-screened 'Under A Piaya Moon', also sent a special video message to encourage filmmakers to submit their panalo stories for submission.

In addition to the messages from the full-length directors, five student directors also offered messages at the event in order to demonstrate the kinds of experiences and opportunities Puregold CinePanalo can bring young aspiring filmmakers.

In attendance were Always Panalo Film awardee Jenievive Adame, Best Director winner Dizelle Masilungan, and regional filmmakers Marian Jayce Tiongzon and Jonah Demonteverde.

The event was also opened by Puregold’s Senior Marketing Manager Ivy Piedad, who delivered an emphatic statement on the importance of rewarding Filipino artistry and celebrating the spirit of Kwentong Panalo ng Buhay. She also noted that Puregold CinePanalo’s mandate found it especially important to give opportunities to student filmmakers who may not have the same access to filmmaking resources as established directors do.

Marian Jayce Tiongzon, Ivy Piedad, and Chris Cahilig

“When we first launched Puregold CinePanalo, we envisioned it to champion Filipino stories, advocate for student filmmakers by providing them with a platform for their dream short films, and elevate the local film scene,” said Piedad.

Piedad noted how the previous iteration of the Puregold CinePanalo was instrumental in bringing to light the talents of several young, aspiring filmmakers, some of whom have used the momentum from the competition to further fuel their artistic dreams.

“We saw the birth of promising talents, with several inspiring stories that came to life on the big screen. Fueled by last edition’s success, here we are once again!” continued Piedad, “Back and bigger than ever, ready to celebrate another year of incredible films and mark the second chapter of Puregold CinePnalo.”

FIRST LADY LIZA ARANETA-MARCOS BRINGS HEALTHCARE NEARER TO THE PEOPLE

FIRST Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos turned over the “Bagong Pilipinas” mobile clinics to provincial governors in Central Luzon, as part of her program to bring better healthcare to the people in far flung areas.

The First Lady said 82 brand new modern mobile clinics, equipped with medical equipment, including X-Ray, CT-Scan, Ultrasound, and blood screening facilities will play a crucial role in providing preventive health services directly to communities.

The distribution of the state-of-the-art mobile units comes ahead of the State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday, July 22.

The first lady also announced that by 2025, in cooperation with the Department of Health (DOH), will turn over mobile clinics to 1,500 municipalities nationwide.

"Through this, my husband wants to bring health services closer to the people,” she explained before the governors signed the deeds of donation.
The mobile clinics were “inspired” by the First Lady’s “Lab For All,” a health and social program in communities which will “enhance accessibility, improve health outcomes, strengthen local health programs.”
So far, fourteen provinces in Northern Luzon have already received the Bagong Pilipinas Mobile Clinics, which includes Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Apayao, Cagayan, Quirino, Isabela, and Nueva Vizcaya.

Bagong Pilipinas Mobile Clinics are fully equipped for medical, diagnostic, and referral services to bring health care to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

Senator Zubiri highlights key concerns of Filipinos ahead of President Bongbong Marcos’ SONA on July 22

AS the nation prepares for President Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s third State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 22, Senator Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri underscores the critical topics he hopes the President will address, reflecting the most pressing concerns of Filipinos today.

"The country's growth has been dampened by high inflation, a challenge that President Marcos must address if we are to achieve our goal of becoming an upper-middle-income economy by 2028," said Zubiri.

Senator Zubiri is eager to hear the President's plan for reducing inflation and the high cost of goods, particularly rice, to ensure that economic growth benefits every working-class Filipino.

"I believe it is essential that the prosperity reflected in our GDP translates into tangible improvements in the daily lives of our people," he emphasized.

Another key issue Zubiri wants the President to tackle is the daily wage increase for minimum wage earners, who are suffering the most from rising inflation.

"The wage increases of late are not enough to help Filipinos cope with the rising prices of goods. We should pass the minimum wage law that the Senate has already acted upon on third reading and is languishing at the House of Representatives," Zubiri stated.

"Ultimately, the true measure of a country’s economic success is whether every family can afford to put food on their table. We urge the President to consider supporting the legislated wage hike bill."

Food security also remains a priority amid global uncertainties. Senator Zubiri expects the President to outline a comprehensive strategy to boost local agricultural production, support farmers, and reduce reliance on imports.

Additionally, Zubiri calls for decisive action on the issue of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). "The industry has been plagued by criminal activities, and the social costs far outweigh the revenues. It is time for a clear policy on POGOs, whether it involves an immediate ban or a phased transition to other industries for affected workers," he asserted.

Finally, as a senator and a former Senate President, Zubiri looks forward to the President’s legislative agenda. "We will consider and support the President’s legislative priorities as part of our six-member bloc in the Senate. Our goal is to work together for the welfare and prosperity of all Filipinos," Zubiri concluded.

The upcoming SONA presents an opportunity for President Marcos to address these critical issues and outline a vision that ensures inclusive growth and development for the nation.

ZUBIRI: SIGNING OF RECIPROCAL ACCESS PACT WITH JAPAN TIMELY, TO BOLSTER DEFENSE INTEROPERABILITY

FORMER Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri lauded the signing of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the Philippines and Japan, saying this is very timely and will boost the country’s defense interoperability with the friendly Asian neighbor.

Zubiri, a long-time advocate of the RAA, said the agreement is a partnership of like-minded nations that will truly bolster the country’s naval training and use of ships and equipment purchased from Japan, further strengthening the Philippines’ defense and security in the Asia-Pacific region.

“It was in 2022 when then-Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko and I first discussed the possibility of pursuing a Reciprocal Access Agreement between our countries, and I brought this idea to President Marcos early into his administration,” Zubiri expressed.

“So, I welcome this signing, and I am very hopeful that it will be a key partnership for achieving peace in the region.”

Zubiri emphasized that the RAA signing would strengthen the strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan, which he described as an “invaluable ally” to the Philippines.

“Japan is already an invaluable ally, and their assistance has been vital to the modernization of our Coast Guard and Navy. With this RAA, we can further strengthen our capacity-building through joint military exercises,” he declared.

Zubiri has consistently pushed for the RAA during various meetings with Japanese officials, including President Marcos’ visit to Japan in February 2023 and the Senate’s own parliamentary visit to Japan in April 2023, where they met with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.

The Prime Minister, upon the invitation of Zubiri, then came to the Philippines in November 2023 to give a historic policy speech during a joint session of the Philippine Congress. It was in this speech that he confirmed that he and President Marcos were in concurrence over the need to pursue the RAA.

“Our persistence has paid off, and now we can look forward to strengthened security and defense cooperations under the RAA,” Zubiri said.

The Japan-Philippines RAA is an agreement which establishes procedures for the cooperative activities that are conducted by forces of Japan and the Philippines while the force of one country is visiting the other country and defines a legal status of the visiting force. The Philippines is the third country with which Japan signed the RAA, following Australia and the United Kingdom.

It is expected that the Japan-Philippines RAA will facilitate the implementation of cooperative activities, such as joint exercises and disaster relief between Japan and the Philippines and improve interoperability between the forces of the two countries.

As the security environment in the region becomes increasingly severe, the signing of this important security-related agreement with the Philippines, a strategic partner located at a strategic juncture on the sea lanes and sharing fundamental values and principles with Japan, will further promote security and defense cooperation between the two countries and firmly support peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

BINI celebrates their transformation in their newest single with Puregold

THE nation’s girl group BINI, known for their chart-topping hits, is back with a unique single in collaboration with Puregold.

This time, they've taken a solo approach to the popular track “Nasa Atin ang Panalo,” infusing it with their own theme of “Ang Kwento ng Pagbabago.”

“When we decided to feature and work with our country’s leading musical artists, we knew we had to collaborate with BINI,” says Puregold President Vincent Co.

“They’ve worked hard to make themselves an important part of the local music landscape, and we’re proud to showcase their talent in collaboration with Puregold.”

Several weeks ago, Puregold released the “Nasa Atin ang Panalo” collaboration music video featuring four superstar acts in BINI, SB19, Flow G, and SunKissed Lola. After teasing what each artist could do with the song, we’re now getting the first complete version as performed by a single artist in BINI.

In the single, BINI focuses on their growth and transformation as artists. Just as their loyal fans are called “Blooms” so do the singers of BINI continue to grow and blossom through their time in the spotlight. The opening lyrics of this song speak to how all their experiences, past and present, have led them to where they are today: “Ang mga itinuro ng noon / Dalhin at palakasin ang ngayon.”

The song serves as a reminder to all the Blooms and music fans in the country, that there’s always a new day to better oneself. BINI sums this up perfectly in the pre-chorus by singing, “Anuman ang pinagmulan / Mas mahalaga ang pupuntahan!”

In the music video for the single, BINI is shown dancing and performing in a stylized impression of a Puregold store. Here, they share their “panalo” story with Puregold’s employees and everyday shoppers. The song celebrates BINI and the people who have led Puregold to its own success over the years.

“Just like BINI, Puregold is always working to achieve its own ‘kwento ng pagbabago,’” said Ivy Hayagan-Piedad, senior marketing manager of Puregold.

“That’s why we continue to open locations nationwide, innovate to serve our customers better, and also be active in different initiatives to make a difference for the Philippines.”

BINI is set to be one of the main acts at Puregold’s highly-anticipated “Nasa Atin ang Panalo” Thanksgiving concert this July 12 at Araneta Coliseum. They will share the stage with SB19 and Flow G, and SunKissed Lola will deliver a special performance. For information on how to secure tickets, make sure to follow Puregold and the artists on all their social media platforms.
